A tale of two rugged Android smartphones

SINGAPORE–While walking the halls of the CommunicAsia 2012 show floor, we bumped into these two rugged Android 2.3 smartphones. The first is Winmate’s E430M, a handset made for warehouse use and military service.

Winmate’s rugged phone also comes with a Windows Mobile 6.5 version. Yes, you read that right.

It features an IP66 level of dust and water resistance, and is compliant with the MIL-ST 810G standard. The unit that we spent time with also came with a bar code scanner, useful for warehouse inventory stock takes. Since it’s heavily ruggedised, it’s likely to survive a drop from when you’re up on a ladder, too.

The 4.3-inch display sports a WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resolution, and the smartphone is powered by a single-core 650MHz processor. We didn’t notice any visible lag in our brief time with it though. This bulky handset will not be available to consumers.

Now, if you want something you can actually buy, the Seals TS3 is a slimmer handset with some consumer-oriented features. It features a dual-SIM card slot, an IP68 rating as well as the MIL-810G military standard.

It comes with only 512MB of storage, but you can expand that via a microSD card slot. The 3.5-inch HVGA (480 x 320 pixel) display may not be as big as Winmate’s smartphone, but you do get a special SOS rescue button that you can tap once to turn on the flashlight. Hold that down and the handset will send an emergency message to five selected friends with your location.

While the unit comes with Android 2.3, a company representative told us that the ICS update is in the works, though there’s no date set for when it will arrive.

The phone can also be taken to a depth of two meters under water, so if you feel the urge to WhatsApp your buddies while swimming, this could be your smartphone. We’re told that the company is in talks with local Singapore telcos and the handset is expected to retail for S$680-S$880 without an operator contract.

Hey Mr Fish, could you answer the phone, please?
